Your skin needs to last you a lifetime and it has a lot of important jobs to do. It helps to regulate your temperature, it turns sunlight into vitamin d, it keeps invading germs at bay, and perhaps its most important quality of all (for some) is that it needs to keep you looking fantastic! You can’t afford to neglect your skin, so we’ve gathered a few of the best bits of advice for keeping it in tip-top shape.
1. Work up a Sweat
Exercise gets you sweating, and that’s one of your body’s important avenues for venting toxins. It also removes dead skin cells to reveal the fresh new layer that’s always growing beneath. If you skip your daily dose of exercise then your skin will soon show it, so perform whatever pulse-raiser you enjoy the most for at least half an hour every day.
2. Hair Care Aware
If you use hair care products then you might not put them on your face, but they can still find their way there and clog up your skin pores. With hairspray, do your face a favour and cover it with a clean towel while you apply it, and if you can bear to look like 1977, wear a sweatband when you exercise to soak up hair products that will drip when you sweat.
Your skin is always producing fresh cells and shedding old ones, but it often needs extra help to clear away all the dead stuff that’s ready to leave. You don’t need to go crazy—in fact, it’s essential that you don’t—but a regular gentle rubdown is going to do wonders for revealing the newer, healthier skin that’s just below the surface.
4. Java Jinx
If your skin is so dry that you think you must have been jinxed, then check your caffeine intake. Caffeine is notorious for causing dehydration, but quitting can be very hard if you’ve developed a habit. All is not lost though, because upping your water intake to several glasses a day will help to combat the drying effect of caffeine (along with delivering a myriad of other benefits) and it may even help you to drink fewer cups of tea and coffee too.
Here’s another reason to cut down on the caffeine—it can mess with your sleep which will show in your skin. As a society, we’ve become pretty blasé about muscling through sleep deprivation, but no amount of catching up at the weekend can truly replace the sleep you didn’t get last night. Your skin goes through a lot, and your body needs that time to regenerate and rebuild the damage that daily life dishes out, so try to get enough sleep every night if you want to keep your skin healthy.
Dry skin loves a daily dose of moisturizer, and it’s especially receptive after you step out of the shower. Apply lotion to seal in the moisture that your skin has just absorbed to keep it supple.
7. Sunscreen to Stay Pristine
Sunscreen is a lifesaver because it reduces your chance of getting skin cancer. SPF cream is going to keep you protected when the sun’s rays are at full force, and if you go with formulas made with zinc then you’ll find that they won’t be greasy or irritating, a blessing if you’re prone to acne. Formulas with zinc oxide or titanium oxide physically reflect the sun’s UVB and UVA rays without making sensitive skin complain, so they might be a good choice.
8. Cool in the Shades
Let’s stay with the sun for a second and mention sunglasses. Squinting in the sun won’t do your fledgeling crow’s feet any favours, so always wear sunglasses with UV protection. Larger ones will help to keep the sun off the thinner, more sensitive skin around your eyes.
9. Don’t Sweat It
Isn’t it great that on hot days you don’t have to pant like a parched puppy? Instead, you’ve been blessed with a dermis covered in sweat glands that keep your core temperature at a safe level. The downside of that is that all the ‘coolant’ you leak can irritate your skin and lead to breakouts. To keep on top of that, make sure your body wash features salicylic acid (great for unblocking pores and reducing sebum production) or benzoyl peroxide (attacks the bacteria that blocks pores) among its ingredients.
10. Sleep Position
Ever woken up with sleep lines? It may be down to the position you were sleeping in, and if you get them regularly, they may mature into deep-set wrinkles. Try sleeping on your back more often for skin that looks less like a road map.
11. Go Smoke-Free
Far fewer people light up a cigarette these days, and if you’re one of them, then great, but even if you’ve beaten the habit, second-hand smoke can still prematurely age your skin. Skin sags and wrinkles faster when you expose it to smokey atmospheres, so they’re best avoided.
12. Fabulous Fish
Fish oils are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which do wonders for smooth skin (and your joints and heart too). Get yours from oily fish, or if you aren’t a big fan of seafood then try capsules. They pack all the nutritional benefits without the aftertaste.
Even if you can only manage just a few of these suggestions then trust us, your skin will thank you for it. It doesn’t take much to add them to your daily routine and the health rewards you get will be well worth it.
