Bill Gates wants to save the world from climate disasters and hopes to become even richer in the process, so should your portfolio be following his? The world’s fourth-richest man has sunk close to $2 billion of his $124 billion fortune into companies that are working towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions from human activity, and some of his fellow multi-billionaires like Elon Musk are following his lead. So, should investors follow Gates towards a carbon-neutral future too?

The answer is yes. Humans currently pump about 51 billion tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year, and scientists are now saying that the planet could fast be approaching a tipping point. They suggest we will need to reduce emissions to zero by 2050, and if we don’t, then our warming planet will experience runaway climate change. Arctic ice will melt, the Gulfstream will switch off, sea levels will rise (displacing millions of people in coastal habitats), and large parts of the world will become uninhabitable.

Save the Planet & Make Extra Income

Bill Gates has been investing in companies that are trying to stop this from happening. One of Gates’s investments is an Icelandic company called Carbfix, which has developed a process that captures carbon dioxide and dissolves it in water. They then inject it into the ground, and within two years it turns into stone. It’s a cheap and attractive proposition, which is why investors are swarming in.

New Era for Innovative CO2 Investments

Another method is called Direct Air Capture, and as the name suggests it’s about removing excess carbon dioxide from the air after it’s been produced. One company doing this is called Carbon Engineering, and Gates has put some of his green investment dollars into it too. Its prototype plant is hard to miss, with its row upon row of large fans that help it to extract more than a ton of pure CO2 from the air every day. But impressive though this proof of concept is, it’s only one part of the equation.

After partnering with California-based company Greyrock, the company can now combine the CO2 captured from the air with hydrogen that’s been split from water (using clean electricity) to create a synthetic petrol and diesel mix. Yes, you read that right. They are manufacturing fuel from thin air and water. They call this process “Air to Fuels”, and when scaled up it could be a worldwide game-changer.

Bill Gates safe investment strategy

Gates has also invested in TerraPower, whose nuclear reactor uses depleted uranium for fuel. If its prototype does well, then hundreds of these power stations could start being built in a decade’s time, replacing coal and gas-burning plants completely.

Climate change skeptics may continue to insist that there isn’t a problem, but whichever side of the fence you sit on with this issue, it helps to follow the money. Sensible investors can’t afford to ignore the actions of hard-nosed business people like Bill Gates, who became incredibly wealthy by backing safe bets. So, if he thinks backing the companies that reduce carbon emissions is the way to go, you would have to be supremely confident to bet against him.

You don’t need to have billions in your bank account. Anyone can invest in carbon stocks too, and take part in the effort to change the future.
